How much time will it take?
Each course is 4 hours online, taken at times to suit you, plus time applying the learning in your own library. There are no deadlines set online - you start any time and work at your own pace.
Will this support our whole-school reading culture?
Yes! There are lots of ideas that will take you wider than the library offer into the whole school. But if you want to start with what's manageable, the courses focus on improving the student experience of your own library without spending a lot of money.
Which course should we take first?
Creating a Welcoming School Library is the natural starting point - a fast, practical course built to make a real difference in 4 weeks. Engaging Students in Reading then goes deeper, into student motivations and preferences and your day-to-day reading offer. Levels and prices are shown against each course above.
Is there a certificate at the end?
Yes - every learner who successfully completes a course is awarded a Certificate of Achievement. Opening the Book is an officially recognised training provider by CILIP, the UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
Can our school pay by credit card or bank transfer?
Yes. A single place can be bought by card at checkout with fast access - we email login details within one working day. For multiple places we manage quotes and invoices and you can pay either by electronic bank transfer or by credit card - see how to pay.
Can I plan the work during school breaks and vacations?
Many school librarians are used to working alone and planning activities in the school holidays to put into practice when school starts again. Both our school courses can be used this way. You can do more than half of the course online - reading, reflecting, interacting - then download print resources to support reading activities in the library and plan how to use them with your students.
